UV-C Germicidal Light (UVGI) and Coronavirus

We have created this page to feature UV-C Germicidal Light products that can be used against the coronavirus. Case studies show that the coronavirus is effectively inactivated by UVC light at 254 nm. These studies are based on the SARS-CoV virus. The COVID-19 virus has not yet been made available for testing. We sell industrial-strength UV-C units used primarily in healthcare, industrial and commercial applications.

UPDATED APRIL 25, 2020: The New England Journal of Medicine has published an article showing that COVID-19 can remain airborne and infectious for 3 hours. The virus can survive on surfaces for days. See article HERE.

We offer a full-range of UV-C germicidal light products for healthcare, water, HVAC and kitchen applications on UVLightSolutions.com. We recommend the specific products below because they are safe and effective for residential use if the directions are properly followed. UV-C light is damaging to the skin and eyes. Never look directly at the UV-C light or shine the light on your bare skin. Be sure to follow all safety precautions when using these devices.

PLEASE NOTE: Production of these units might take 2-3 weeks due to demand.

BEWARE!! Anyone can make a blue light and call it "UV-C" or "Germicidal"

What sets this UV-C light apart from the cheap models?

1. Our UV-C lights are made in the US by American Ultraviolet. We have been making UV-C products since 1960.
2. We use the best quality bulbs, ballasts and housings. (Shatter-proof High Output (HO) bulbs, 5 year warranty on ballasts, sturdy, lightweight aluminum housing.)
3. Our bulbs last 12,000 hours. Replacement bulbs will ALWAYS BE AVAILABLE. Don't buy a light that does not offer replacement bulbs when needed.
4.  MOST IMPORTANT!!! Most companies rate their units by watts alone. Our unit has been tested using the industry standard W/cm2. Our unit produces ≥735µW/cm2 of UVC intensity @ 6".  (See What about WATTS? below)
5. Our lamps produce UV-C light at the optimal germicidal wavelength of 254 nm

ROOM TREATMENT OF CORONAVIRUS (SARS-CoV)

There is considerable evidence for the airborne transmission of viruses via fine aerosols from sneezing and coughing. Studies have shown that these aerosols can remain airborne and viable for hours (See Study HERE). Upper-Air UV-C devices have been used in the healthcare industry since the 1960s.

How Does It Work?

The Upper-Air units are mounted at a height of 7 or 8 feet on the wall. Louvers on the units direct the UV light upward. This creates a zone of UV-C light at the top portion of the room, above the occupants. Natural convection, air from HVAC vents and human movement cause the air in the room to circulate. As air enters the disinfection zone, it is exposed to the UV-C light rays. This destroys microorganisms in the air.

HVAC TREATMENT OF CORONAVIRUS (SARS-CoV)

As mentioned above, studies show that virus-containing aerosols can become airborne and remain viable for hours. These viruses can now enter your HVAC system and be spread around your entire house or building. The products below are designed to inactivate microorganisms in the evaporator coil and/or the airstream as it travels through the ductwork in your HVAC system. Now, instead of the HVAC spreading viruses, it actually acts as a giant air purifier and kills viruses.

Is UV-C Light Safe?

Humans and pets should avoid prolonged direct exposure to UV-C light. Our handheld units are designed to shine the UV-C down and away from the user. Our Upper-Air products are used to radiate the air above the occupants (7 feet and higher). Direct exposure results in temporary skin redness and eye irritation.  Unlike some UV-C lights, our lights DO NOT produce ozone, a gas that is harmful to humans and pets. Avoid touching UV-C bulbs as the oil from our skin can cause a "hot spot" and reduce the bulb's lifespan.

UV or UV-C?

Although often used interchangeably, UV light and UV-C light have different definitions. Ultraviolet (or UV) light falls in the electromagnetic spectrum between visible light and X-rays with a wavelength from 10 nm to 400 nm. The sun emits four different types of UV light: UV-V, UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. UV-C light (200-280 nm) has the shortest wavelength and the highest energy. It is powerful enough to inactivate microorganisms. So, UV is a broad term whereas UV-C is a specific germicidal type of UV light.  We generally use the term "UV-C light" on this website but use the more common "UV light" in our marketing and advertising.

What about WATTS?

Most UVC lamp sellers focus on wattage. They propagate the thinking that the higher the lamp wattage, the more powerful the germicidal effects of the unit. However, the lamp wattage stats show how much power the lamp uses. What is much more important is the lamp OUTPUT or intensity, which is measured in units of microwatts per square centimeter. Our lamps are rated to produce 11.7 microwatts/cm2 per linear inch of lamp arc length at a distance of one meter. So, keep in mind that UVC light is about time and intensity, not just energy usage in watts.
